Junia stood there with her hands in her mother’s, and she looked at me, and then past her mother at the silver-haired man by the door, and then out at the room.
And then she said, “Of course, Mom. I understand.”
She said it gently. That’s what frightened me.
“I have something for you, actually. I put it together specially, for when you came.”
Two of Micah’s cousins carried it out from behind the cake table. A white box, about the size of a footlocker, with a lid.
They set it down on the floor in front of her.
Sabina was still smiling when she took the lid off.
I watched my ex-wife’s face come apart in about two seconds. She went the color of the tablecloth.
And she screamed — actually screamed, in a barn, at a wedding — “Oh my God. No. Take it away. How dare you.”
PART 2 — TWO HUNDRED AND ELEVEN
She came straight across the floor to where I was standing with my daughter.
Junia had my hands in both of hers. We had been standing there about a minute; she’d come over to say something about her sister Bess and had just taken hold of my hands the way she does.
Sabina stepped in between us, put a hand flat on my chest and pressed me back a step, and took my daughter’s hands out of mine.
I did not push back. I want to be honest that this was not restraint. I simply did not move, the way you don’t move when something happens too fast.
And she said, to the whole barn, warm as anything:
“Step back. She’s my daughter too.” Then, to Junia, holding both her hands: “It was your father who was poor. I only ever wanted better for you. Tell them, sweetheart.”
A hundred and fifty people went silent at the same time.
Nobody said anything. Not one. Dot half stood up and then sat down. Micah’s grandmother put her eyes on the tablecloth.
