He simply lowered his head.
“I was wrong.”
I looked at the baby again.
He stirred, opened his eyes for the first time, and made a tiny sound.
Something inside me broke open.
I reached for him.
Eric carefully placed the baby in my arms.
The moment his tiny fingers wrapped around mine, I began to cry.
Not the quiet tears I had shed alone in hotel rooms.
Not the grief I had carried for a year.
These were tears of shock, relief, anger, and a love so overwhelming I couldn’t name it.
Eric stood a few feet away, crying silently.
“What did you name him?” I whispered.
Eric smiled through his tears.
“We didn’t.”
I looked down at the little boy.
“Then we’ll choose his name together.”
Eric nodded.
But before I could say anything else, he stepped closer.
“I need you to know one more thing.”
I looked at him.
“I didn’t bring him here because I was hiding another family.”
He took a shaky breath.
“I brought him home because this was the first place that ever belonged to both of you.
I wanted the first time you met him to be here.”
I looked around our bedroom.
My side of the bed.
His side.
And the tiny space between us where our child now slept.
For months, I had believed that silence meant Eric had stopped loving me.
Now I understood something more complicated.
Sometimes people make terrible decisions while trying to protect the people they love.
That didn’t erase what Eric had done.
It didn’t excuse the secreTS.
And it certainly didn’t mean our marriage could return to what it had been overnight.
I told him that.
“I love you,” I said.
“But loving you doesn’t mean pretending this didn’t happen.”
“I don’t want you to pretend.”
“Then we’re going to get help.
We’re going to face everything—the hospital, the paperwork, the mistakes, the months we lost.”
Eric nodded.
“Together?”
I looked down at our son.
Then I looked at the man I had once trusted without question.
“Together.
But this time, with no secreTS.”
He reached for my hand.
I let him hold it.
Not because everything was suddenly perfect.
Because we had finally found the truth.
The next morning, lawyers and doctors began untangling the nightmare that had separated us from our child.
