I filled them in that night at my own kitchen table with three of them asleep on the sofa behind me.
My mother did not come to the hearing in 1998. Neither did my father.
She met the children properly for the first time in 2002 and she was, by then and for the last eleven years of her life, extremely good to them, and I have never once brought that November up with anybody in my family.
PART 3 — 1995
Here is what that letter says, and I have read it about two hundred times since Sunday.
In the September of 1995, five months before he went, Leland Brack was told by a social worker that the department was going to move on those children.
Not because of anything he had done as a father. The letter is very clear about that and so is the file, which I have now seen.
There was a conviction from 1987. He was nineteen. It was a serious one and it is not mine to put here, and he served time for it, and it is the reason he was working nights in a yard at thirty-six with ten children.
In 1994, when their mother died, that conviction came onto a new kind of file.
The social worker told him, informally, in a car park, that the assessment was going to go against him and that ten children do not get placed together and that the likeliest outcome was four placements across two counties.
And she told him one other thing.
That the single factor most likely to change the outcome was a stable second carer in the household who was already known to the children.
Me.
But not married to him. That was the part that finished him.
Because the moment I married Leland Brack, his file became my file, and an assessment of that household would have been an assessment of him with me attached to it.
Whereas a woman of twenty-seven with no record, living in that house, known to all ten, applying on her own account, was a completely different application.
So he wrote six words and left, and he wrote them exactly the way he did — I can’t do this anymore — because he needed me to believe he was a coward.
The letter says: If you had known, you would have fought it. And we would have lost, and you would have lost them too.
