“Your mother did not die in an accident, Emily. She left you a map.”
The recording stopped.
No one moved.
The office was silent except for Noah’s uneven breathing and the faint hum of the screen.
I stared down at the bracelet, at the little gold leaf I had worn as a girl, the keepsake I had mourned, the treasure that had somehow found its way back to me on the very day my life came apart.
A map.
My mother had left me a map.
Hidden in plain sight.
Then, from somewhere deep inside Aunt Margaret’s antique desk, there came a soft click.
A drawer I had never noticed slid open by itself.
Inside lay a folded piece of blue paper.
And written across it, in my mother’s handwriting, were five words that changed everything:
Emily, Daniel was not alone.
