PART 3 (End): My Husband Brought His Mistress Home To Throw Me Out—But My Aunt’s Final Secret Turned Their Perfect Plan Against Them 9027

Daniel flinched as if I had slapped him.

For the first time, I noticed how tired he looked. Beneath the expensive haircut, the careful suit, the practiced charm—there were shadows. Lines at the corners of his mouth. A tightness around the eyes.

This was not only a man who had been caught.

This was a man who had been running.

Mr. Meyers set the case on the entry table. “Mrs. Carter, the combination may be in the sealed materials your aunt left at the firm. We can transport this securely—”

“No,” Daniel said quickly. Too quickly.

I turned toward him.

And that was when Vanessa appeared from the hallway.

She was holding her phone, but her hand shook so badly the screen flashed on and off.

“I can open it,” she said.

Daniel spun around. “Vanessa, stop.”

Her eyes were bright with tears now. “No. I’m done. I’m not going down for something you told me was harmless.”

A silence fell.

Mr. Meyers watched her carefully. “Ms. Reed, what exactly did Mr. Carter tell you?”

Vanessa looked at me, and for the first time there was no smugness in her face. Only fear. And shame.

“He said Margaret was hiding documents that belonged to his company. He said she had stolen files from Whitmore Tower years ago. He said if we got them back, everything would be fine.”

I gripped the edge of the table. “Everything?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled. “The investors. The accounts. The loan.”

Daniel said her name again, but softer this time. “Please.”

She looked at him as if she had finally heard the truth beneath his voice.

“You said Emily knew,” Vanessa whispered. “You said the divorce was mutual. You said she had drained you for years.”

Lily’s accusation returned in my mind.

You knew.

Maybe Vanessa had known some things.

But not all.

Pain has a way of arriving with unexpected complications. It would have been easier to hate her completely. Easier to make her the villain and Daniel the fool. But standing there, watching her shake in my hallway, I realized Daniel had handed out lies like keys, giving each person a different door.

Mr. Meyers spoke quietly. “Ms. Reed, what is the combination?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Daniel’s face hardened. “Don’t.”

She looked at me.

Then she said, “Lily’s birthday.”

My breath caught.

Noah’s soccer ball thudded faintly outside as the wind moved it across the patio.
