The Hallway Holds Its Breath
Caleb’s hand was cold as it pressed the paper into mine, the faint rustle the only sound between the relentless beeps of machines.
“Emily, it’s time you learned why I really married Grace,” he whispered, his voice barely louder than the ventilator’s hiss.
I stared at the folded sheet, the edges crumpled from his grip, feeling the weight of his secret settle on my shoulders.
Behind the swinging doors, I could hear the frantic shouts of nurses, the metallic clang of a gurney being wheeled away.
Grace’s name was being called for emergency surgery; the doctors spoke in clipped, urgent tones that I could not make out.
My heart hammered against my ribs, each thump echoing the sterile fluorescent lights buzzing overhead.
“She asked me to tell you if she couldn’t… if she couldn’t explain it herself afterward,” Caleb said, his eyes flickering to the hallway floor.
I clenched the paper tighter, feeling the thin fibers bite into my palm.
“What does she want me to know?” I asked, voice shaking, the words tangled with fear and curiosity.
He swallowed, the color draining from his face as if the hallway itself were sucking the life out of him.
“You need to see something,” he said, turning away from the doors that led to the operating theater.
He led me down a side corridor, the smell of antiseptic growing stronger with each step, the distant beeping now a distant drum.
When we stopped, the hallway opened into a small, dimly lit staff lounge, the only place left untouched by the chaos outside.
The Photo Album Unveils a Hidden Guardian
Caleb pushed open the heavy wooden door, and the soft hum of a vending machine greeted us.
He gestured to a battered leather‑bound album perched on a side table, its corners frayed from years of handling.
“I kept this for the… for when you’re ready,” he said, his voice barely a whisper, eyes darting to the hallway as if expecting someone to burst in.
I lifted the cover, and the first page was a faded photograph of a younger Grace, smiling shyly, her hand clutching a small piece of paper.
In the background, a birth certificate peeked from under the photo, the ink already darkened, the name at the top: Emily.
