💔 I Took My Twin Children, Both Battling Stage 4 Cancer, to See the Ocean and Fulfill Their Greatest—and Perhaps FINAL—WISH… 🥺 But Then the Hotel Manager Knocked on Our Door and Said, “There’s Something About This Trip You Don’t Know”…

I was raising my six-year-old twins, Lily and Ben, all by myself.

Biological Sciences

They had been born just six minutes apart and were almost never separated. Lily loved reminding everyone that she was the older one, while Ben always laughed and said that six minutes didn’t count.

But one day, our normal life came to an end.

Lily began getting tired very quickly, running fevers at night, and losing her appetite. At first, I thought it was just a virus. But after several tests, the doctor sat my husband, Chris, and me down in his office and said the one word every parent fears.

Family Law

Lily had  cancer.

I reached for Chris’s hand.

He immediately pulled it away.

The next morning, his suitcase was standing by the front  door.

“Are you really leaving?”

Chris wouldn’t even look me in the eyes.

Cancer

“I can’t live in  hospitals every day. I can’t watch her suffer.”

The children were standing at the top of the stairs.

Lily silently held her brother’s hand.

Ben asked only one thing.

“Daddy, when are you coming back?”

Water & Marine Sciences

Chris didn’t answer.

He left.

And he never called again.

I thought nothing worse could possibly happen to our family.

Five months later, in the same hospital, the doctor sat me down in front of him for the second time.

This time, he was holding Ben’s test results.

The moment I saw the doctor’s face, I understood before he even spoke.

Ben had cancer too.

Both of my children.

My twins.

Born on the same day, inseparable their entire lives, and now both fighting the same terrifying disease.

Doors & Windows

It felt as though our home had moved into the hospital.

When Lily received chemotherapy, Ben sat beside her. When Ben felt sick, Lily held his hand.

The only person helping us was my father, George.

Every evening, he came to the hospital and read the children stories about the ocean.

One day, Ben asked him,

Anatomy

“Grandpa, can you see where the ocean ends?”

“No.”

Lily smiled.
