The day my dying husband asked me to adopt a sixteen-year-old girl, I feared she was the daughter he’d hidden from me. I was wrong. The truth was far worse. Twenty-four hours after his funeral, she handed me a wooden box and destroyed everything I thought I knew about my  marriage.

The house felt painfully quiet the morning the doctor gave us the death sentence.

For fifteen years, David and I had built a fortress of love.

One sentence from a stranger in a white coat cracked its foundation.

“Stage 4,” the doctor repeated gently. “We can’t save him. All we can do is keep him as comfortable as possible.”

David squeezed my hand harder, as if he were the one holding me up.

The doctor gave us the death sentence.

“How long?” I whispered.

“Weeks. Perhaps a few months, if we’re lucky.”

Back home, our two children clung to their father while he pretended everything was fine.

I pretended too.

But some nights, I caught him staring at the ceiling, his eyes glassy with something heavier than  pain.

He pretended everything was fine.

“What is it, David?” I asked one evening, curling against his thin shoulder. “Talk to me.”

“I’m just tired, my love.”

“You’re keeping something from me. I can feel it.”

He turned his face toward the wall.

“Please. Just let me hold you tonight.”

Three weeks into hospice care, he asked me something shocking.

“You’re keeping something from me. I can feel it.”

He reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a photograph, worn soft at the corners.

A solemn sixteen-year-old girl stared back at me, her dark eyes far too old for her face.

“Her name is Grace,” David said quietly. “I need you to adopt her before I die.”

My whole body went cold.

“David, what are you saying? Who is this girl?”

“Please. Just trust me.”

“I need you to adopt her before I die.”

“Trust you? You’re handing me a stranger’s photograph and asking me to bring her into our family, and you won’t even tell me why?”

“I’ll explain everything, I swear. But first, bring her home. She has no one else.”

I searched his face for the man I had  married.
