A Barefoot Girl Walked Into the ER Carrying Newborn Twins. Then Police Found a Note
How she hated peas.
How she could read far above her grade level.
How she was afraid of thunderstorms but loved old tractors.
How she asked questions until adults surrendered.
How she resembled Daniel when she frowned.
At sunrise, Lily entered with Maria.
She stopped when she saw her mother awake.
“Mommy?”
Anna held out both arms.
Lily ran.
Daniel stepped aside as she climbed carefully onto the bed.
“You woke up.”
“I did.”
“I saved the babies first.”
“I know.”
“I didn’t come back.”
“You were not supposed to.”
“I promised.”
Anna held her face.
“You did everything right.”
Lily looked toward Daniel.
“He said he’s my daddy.”
Anna’s eyes met his.
“Yes.”
“Is he staying?”
Anna could not answer for him.
Daniel did.
“Yes.”
Lily accepted that with a small nod.
Then she rested her head against her mother’s shoulder and fell asleep again.
