This is such a good book. We had older family members that would tell us about the 1918 pandemic from their early childhood memories. This book painted a vivid picture of the horrors of the influenza outbreak and its impact on families and children.

"Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Strout. I started this book a couple of times and finally realized I "needed" to read it so I could read all of Elizabeth Strouts books. I am glad that I did because I can now understand "her" as much as is possible. I am being a bit cryptic but still processing. I had to look again at the date it was published and her perspective on the president. Interesting.

"My Name is Lucy Barton" by Elizabeth Strout. I have read some wonderful books lately! After a few days with a fabulously twisty book with more secrets than most carry I read this today. I needed a little rest from drama which is usually where I seek Anna Quindlen. So happy to have a "small" book on my pile by one of my new favorites, Elizabeth Strout. I just love how she weaves her stories and some of the lessons you learn along the way.

"When Lemons Give You Life" by Anna Johnston. Took me 3 tries and then I connected and couldn't put it own. I had no idea what to expect, hadn't read this author before. A family with so many words left unsaid and misunderstood. Then it all comes together and makes sense. Some crying and some joy but I really wound up loving the book and look forward to reading her other.

"The Calamity Club" by Kathleen Stockett. Started a little slow but on recommendations from others I stuck with it and so happy I did. The character development was so interesting. Loved the lovable characters and didn't even like some of the others, as planned. Very much enjoyed the book, could it have been a bit shorter, I believe so. The way I looked at it was that it was 2 books in one. It would be wonderful to follow Meg's future as she was such an exceptional "person".

"The Burning Side" by Sarah Damoff. After reading Sarah Damoff's "The Bright Years" and realizing it was a debut novel I was so thrilled to know she had another book already published, "The Burning Side" which I loved just as much. A story of a family, of secrets, love, pain with love being the most important. I was teary at times and worried. I wanted to write the ending myself all through the book. I could not put it down and now sad I don't have another day with "them". To say this may be my new favorite author. Can definitely say my favorite "new author". I look forward to everything she will write. I just LOVED it!

"The Things We Never Say" by Elizabeth Strout. How a 200 page book could possibly have so much impact is beyond me. This is one of the most deeply moving books I have read in a long time, if ever. I have been so lucky recently to read some fantastic books, but this is indescribable. It made me think about things that I may not have spoken about, not being sure if there are those things. And the way the world and the political situation factors in to everything. That, I already knew but so succinctly described almost my own words. FIVE stars all the way and already have 2 more books by Elizabeth Strout in my TBR pile.
