Dean, Aaron’s father, carried the loss as anger. He was furious with the doctors, furious with himself, furious with me for reasons neither of us could explain, and finally furious with the world for continuing to turn. Sometimes that anger landed on Aaron simply because Aaron was there.
When Aaron showed his father the dress, Dean’s answer came immediately.
“No. Absolutely not.”
Aaron held the dress against his chest. “It is my graduation.”
“Then wear something that belongs at a graduation.”
“This belongs there.”
Dean’s jaw tightened. “What are you trying to prove?”
“Nothing to you.”
That answer wounded Dean, but instead of stepping back, he pushed harder. He said Aaron was turning the ceremony into a performance. He said he would not sit in front of strangers while they laughed at his son. Aaron listened until his face went pale.
Then he said, “You do not have to sit there.”
