I looked at Ethan.
“She lifted it and threw the water at me.”
Margaret shook her head violently.
“That is a lie.”
“The medical report documents the pattern of the burns.”
“She provoked me.”
Ethan’s face changed.
He heard it too.
First, she said it slipped.
Then, she said I provoked her.
“What did you do?” he asked again.
Margaret pointed at me.
“She insulted me in my own home.”
Denise corrected her.
“This is not your home.”
“It is my son’s.”
“No,” Denise said. “The deed is solely in Colonel Hayes’s name. She purchased the property before the marriage, paid the mortgage in full, and protected it under the prenuptial agreement.”
Margaret turned toward Ethan.
“Tell her.”
Ethan did not speak.
“Tell her this house is yours too.”
“It isn’t,” he said quietly.
Margaret stared at him.
“You told me you bought this place.”
“No. I said we lived here.”
