She studied me for a moment.
Then she nodded.
“Very well.”
Ethan stood in the foyer as I prepared to leave.
“Lauren.”
I turned.
“I’m sorry.”
“For which part?”
“For not stopping this months ago.”
That answer mattered more than a general apology.
He looked toward the guest wing.
“I knew she was cruel to you.”
“Yes.”
“I told myself it was harmless because confronting her was difficult.”
“Yes.”
“I made you carry it.”
I said nothing.
He looked at my bandaged arm.
“I should have protected you.”
“I did not need you to fight every battle for me, Ethan. I needed you not to pretend there was no battle.”
He nodded slowly.
“Are you leaving me?”
“I don’t know yet.”
The honest answer hurt him.
But after everything Margaret had hidden, honesty was the only thing I was willing to offer.
The case unfolded over the following months.
