I had barely closed the front door when I heard my daughter crying outside.
It wasn’t the loud, angry crying of a child who had spilled something and expected to be scolded.
It was thin and frightened, broken by little gasps that immediately made me move.
I ran through the kitchen.
The back door was standing wide open.
Freezing air was pouring into the house.
For one second, I couldn’t understand why the door was open.
Then I saw them.
My wife was outside with our feverish daughter hanging upside down.
There was spilled food on the ground.
And my wife was treating what had happened as punishment.
I didn’t stop to argue.
I didn’t ask for an explanation.
I moved toward my daughter.
I got her down, wrapped her in my coat, and carried her inside.
Her entire body was shaking.
Her teeth were clicking together.
