“Julian called while you were in the shower,” I said.
She stopped, her hand hovering over the yellow lid. “Did he have the signed papers?”
“He did,” I said. “The district attorney filed the final clearance. The state is satisfied that my signature was forged on every single subcontract.”
Maya closed the lid of the powder container with a soft click. “And Chloe?”
“The civil suits are off,” I said. “I told Julian to drop them. She has enough to deal with, finding a new place to live with her boy.”
She looked at me for a long moment, her eyes dark and clear. “You are sure about that, David?”
“I am,” I said. “She helped us when it mattered. She recorded the call. That is enough.”
I rubbed my gold wedding ring against my knuckle, feeling the smooth metal.
“What about Mark?” she asked.
“The federal prosecutors are handling him now,” I said. “There is no way out for him.”
