"Looking for Jane" by Heather Marshall. I knew almost immediately that this book was going to be very special. It will be my favorite book of the year and read in the second month of the year. I can't imagine anything topping it. It's an important book, too, with what is going on right now in our country. And written as the authors first book. I wonder if she can "top" herself. I believe every woman owes it to herself to read this and learn so much from it. We just can't go back and have to look for Jane.

*1971 - Evelyn:*

*Dr. Evelyn Taylor* is now a doctor, but in 1961 she was 16 years old, pregnant, and sent away in shame to *St. Agnes's Home for Unwed Mothers* - a cruel Catholic institution run by nuns.

There, she was forced to give up her much-wanted baby girl for adoption. She was not allowed to hold her. The trauma never left her.

Now, in the 1970s, Evelyn is a physician. Abortion is still illegal in Canada (until 1988). She decides to take a huge risk: she joins an underground, illegal network of women who help women get safe abortions. The code name is *Jane*.

Women who need help are told: *"Ask for Jane."* Evelyn becomes one of the abortion providers, risking arrest, police raids, and losing her medical license, because she never wants another woman to lose choice the way she did.

*1980 - Nancy Mitchell:*

*Nancy Mitchell* is 20, a college student in Toronto. In 1979, she helps her cousin get a dangerous, illegal abortion. Her cousin almost dies.
