THE ENVELOPE ON THE PORCH

My biological father handed me a brand new car for my 17th  birthday. Then he told my stepdad, “Now he knows who his real father is.”

I wanted to humiliate him back. Instead I came up with a lesson the whole  family would still be talking about years later.

My biological father left when I was three.

I don’t actually remember him leaving. What I remember is a version stitched together from things Mom let slip over the years, a suitcase by the door, a car pulling out of the driveway while I napped through the whole thing in my crib. By the time I was old enough to ask real questions, the leaving itself had already hardened into a kind of family folklore, told carefully, edited for a  child’s ears.

For fourteen years it was just Mom and me. Money was the thing we talked around, never straight through.
