My husband called while I was in the middle of a major presentation and casually told me he had inherited millions. Then he laughed, told me to pack my bags, leave “his” house, and sign the divorce papers he had left on the kitchen counter

Cedar Lake sat at the end of a narrow gravel road, surrounded by pine trees and still black water. The house looked forgotten: faded shutters, dusty windows, pine needles across the porch.

Inside, we went straight to the study.

I reached beneath the center drawer of the oak desk and felt tape. A brass key dropped into my palm.

In the pantry, one wooden panel clicked open under my hand.

Behind it sat a blue fireproof lockbox.

I unlocked it on the kitchen island.

Inside were legal documents, old letters, a black flash drive, and an envelope marked RYAN.

Before I could read more, headlights swept across the kitchen window.

A car door slammed.

Then another.

The front door crashed open.

Ryan stormed in, red-faced and furious.

Behind him was Brianna, pale and shaking. She clutched a blue fireproof folder to her chest.

“What are you doing in my house?” Ryan shouted.
