This is such a good book. We had older family members that would tell us about the 1918 pandemic from their early childhood memories. This book painted a vivid picture of the horrors of the influenza outbreak and its impact on families and children.

*The Journey:*

The rest of the novel is Pia's long, arduous journey over months and years to find out what happened to her brothers. She feels intense guilt and shame for leaving them, but she never gives up hope.

Bernice, meanwhile, does everything she can to hide the truth and keep the stolen children.

In the end, Pia must find the courage to confront her fear, face Bernice, and fight for justice to reunite her family.

*Main Theme:* A powerful story about love, resilience, family, anti-immigrant prejudice, and how far a mother/sister will go to protect children, set during a pandemic that feels very similar to COVID-19.
