*1. White Nights (1848) - The most famous of the three*
A lonely, nameless young man in St. Petersburg is a "dreamer" - he lives more in his imagination than in real life. For four white nights (the summer nights in St. Petersburg when it never gets fully dark), he meets a young, sad woman named Nastenka.
She is crying on a bridge because she is waiting for her lover who promised to return after a year, but he has not come. The dreamer falls deeply in love with her. For four nights, they talk for hours and he comforts her.
Nastenka starts to fall for the dreamer too and promises to love him if her lover doesn't return. The dreamer is in heaven - for the first time, his lonely life has meaning.
But on the fourth night, her old lover finally returns. Nastenka leaves the dreamer for him. The dreamer is left alone again, heartbroken, but grateful for the moment of happiness he experienced. He says: "A whole moment of bliss! Is that too little for the whole of a man's life?"
