A small silver key.
And a video recorder.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Mr. Meyers inhaled slowly. “Mrs. Carter, may I?”
I nodded.
He lifted the documents first. The top page was yellowed but crisp, bearing Aunt Margaret’s elegant signature and a seal I did not recognize.
His eyes moved over the page.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?” I asked.
He did not answer immediately.
Instead, he turned to Daniel. “You knew about this?”
Daniel looked away.
Mr. Meyers’ voice lowered. “Mr. Carter.”
“I knew she had files,” Daniel muttered. “I didn’t know what was in that case.”
Vanessa let out a small, broken laugh. “That’s not true.”
Daniel glared at her.
Mr. Meyers handed me the top document.
My aunt’s name was printed at the top.
Margaret Evelyn Whitmore.
Below it was another name.
Eleanor Grace Whitmore.
My mother.
I frowned.
