For years, Daniel had always had words. Smooth words. Polished words. Words that made me doubt my own memory, my own judgment, my own hurt. He could explain away a late night, a missing payment, an unfamiliar perfume lingering on his shirt.
But now, in front of the porch where he had planned to humiliate me, Daniel Carter had nothing to say.
Mr. Meyers took one step closer. “Mrs. Carter, I strongly advise that we continue this conversation inside with the children away from the doorway.”
“No,” Daniel said quickly. “There is no conversation. That photograph proves nothing.”
Vanessa swallowed hard. “Daniel…”
He snapped his head toward her. “Be quiet.”
The words were sharp enough to make Lily recoil.
That was when something changed inside me.
Not all at once. Not like thunder.
More like a door quietly closing.
I stepped in front of my children.
“Don’t speak to her like that,” I said.
