"When Lemons Give You Life" by Anna Johnston. Took me 3 tries and then I connected and couldn't put it own. I had no idea what to expect, hadn't read this author before. A family with so many words left unsaid and misunderstood. Then it all comes together and makes sense. Some crying and some joy but I really wound up loving the book and look forward to reading her other.

This is *When Lemons Give You Life by Anna Johnston* - the new novel from the international bestseller _The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife_. It came out *August 4, 2026*.

Here is a summary in English:

*The Story:*

*Griff Barlow* is a retired Michelin-star chef in his 60s. He has lost everything: his beloved husband Beau died, his career ended in scandal, and he has been diagnosed with dementia. Now he lives in *Sunny Glen Aged Care Facility*, where the food is beige slop and he feels invisible, guilty, and lonely.

He's had enough. He decides to make one last meal for himself - a perfect lemon tart - and then give up on life. So he breaks into the nursing home kitchen at night to bake it.

But cooking wakes something up in him. The joy comes back. So he starts sneaking into the kitchen every night, secretly cooking real, delicious food for the other residents. With every bite, the residents come back to life too. He brings them dignity and flavor.
